There is nothing better than the smell of your own bread emanating from the oven. Learning to bake your own bread is a rewarding experience. A few weeks ago, I attended a sourdough bread baking class at Bourke Street Bakery in Marrickville, Sydney. Bourke Street Bakery was founded in 2004 by two bakers and chefs who shared a love of good food and an appreciation of all things hand-made. Bourke Street Bakery began as a little corner store bakery cafe and it is now one of the most popular bakeries in town, with shops all around Sydney. The hands-on baking classes offered by Bourke Street Bakery are designed to introduce the joys of artisan baking to people of all ages, giving you the skills to make a variety of artisan breads from start to finish.
I’ve had some experience with hand kneading bread dough and shaping before as I attended my first sourdough baking class at Brasserie Bread a few months ago. I definitely felt more comfortable this time around as I was familiar with the process and the techniques. The class was fun and interactive – perfect for anyone who want to give home-baking a go! We made sourdough bread from scratch, using organic white flour, water, Murry River salt and a 12 year-old starter. I learnt some new tips and tricks, including how to make my own bread starter and more importantly how to feed it to keep it alive (this may be a story for another time!).
